By Athol Fugard
Directed by Suzan Kurry
February 22 - March 9, 2013 in the Drury Theatre
Perhaps the greatest work of Athol Fugard, South African author of Master Harold and the Boys, The Road to Mecca tells the story of Miss Helen, an Afrikaner widow who lives alone in the South African Karoo in the 1970s. Inspired by a vision, she has decorated the walls of her home with broken glass, and filled her garden with her cement sculptures, all facing east towards Mecca. Based on the life of the South African artist, Helen Martins, the play examines the degree to which all artists are “outsider” artists. The Road to Mecca enjoyed a 2012 Broadway revival starring the great Rosemary Harris!
Bartell Theatre Award Winner: Best Set Design.
